Iran is apparently sending several tankers to Venezuela to alleviate the supply shortages there.
The data company Refinitiv, which records such transports, speaks of five ships carrying petrol and other petroleum products. Venezuela and Iran have long been friends, but the US has imposed sanctions on both countries. The news agency Reuters quotes a US government official as saying that the United States is already considering a reaction to the shipment.
Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif wrote to UN Secretary General Guterres that any US action would be illegal and would constitute a form of piracy. Iran appointed the Swiss ambassador to represent the interests of the USA in the Islamic Republic.
There is a massive fuel shortage in Venezuela. Only recently, Iran sent material and experts by air to Venezuela to repair a refinery.
