Massive explosion rock Beirut, which caused injuries and extensive damage
A massive explosion rocked Beirut on Tuesday (04.08.2020), smashing windows and damaging buildings in large parts of the city. The explosion sent a huge mushroom cloud into the sky, apparently from a place where a fire had been burning.
The dramatic explosion was captured on numerous videos of people who filmed a fire burning in an industrial port in the Lebanese capital.
The extent of the loss of life caused by the explosion was not immediately clear. The Lebanese Red Cross says it is receiving “thousands of calls” on its emergency line and is begging people to use the line “only for critical and serious cases”.
Early reports suggest that the explosion was caused by a fire in a large fireworks warehouse. Some of the video footage shows what looked like flashes of smaller explosions before the larger explosion, which created a huge shock wave.
The images from the scene show that entire blocks of buildings along the harbor were destroyed, with their structural supports crumpled by the explosion. Numerous fires were set, sending black smoke into the sky.
